ThembaCare Athlone is an 18 bed palliative care centre for babies and children. HIV / AIDS is no longer a death sentence, we offer our babies a second chance at being a child and growing up to be a healthy, productive adult. In some cases though all we can do is offer the child dying of HIV / AIDS love, compassion and a dignified, peaceful death. We also offer follow-up, home-based care.

Focus: palliative care centre for adults and children

Theewaterskloof Municipality figures reflect that the population of the informal settlement in Grabouw is 50,000 of which there is a 34% HIV rate (confirmed by Dept of Health). Therefore, to address these worrying figures, ThembaCare Grabouw started a 9 bed centre in 2006 that provides palliative care and support services to entire families in this community. In 2008 a Palliative Community Care Centre was started by ThembaCare in Grabouw, this unit offers voluntary counseling and testing for HIV and TB.

Focus: Showing love and care to mothers and newborns in practical, tangible ways.

Bosom Buddies services a local state hospital providing nappy bags with clothing, blankets and products for the newborn as well as hygiene products for the mother. By doing this we ensure that no baby goes home without being adequately clothed, and each mom feels that their community does care and the birth is recognized and celebrated.

Focus: step-down unit for babies and children

The Village of Hope is an 9 bed step-down unit for babies and children
who are surviving HIV/AIDS but, due to their social circumstances, are
unable to be placed back home immediately. The Village of Hope team
also run a children's outreach programme in the communities of Grabouw
which teaches sports alongside life-skills.
